Description
The Cabrinha Drifter Apex Kite 2027 is Cabrinha’s dedicated performance surf and strapless-freestyle kite, refined for exceptional slack-line drift, fast reactive steering and predictable handling across a wide range of wave conditions.
Designed to let you focus on the wave rather than constantly managing the kite, the Drifter Apex remains stable when the lines lose tension and follows the rider naturally down the line. Whether you are carving through a clean point break, attacking an onshore section, redirecting beneath the lip or linking turns on a hydrofoil, it is engineered to stay composed and responsive without demanding continuous steering input.
For 2027, Cabrinha has retained the characteristics that made the Drifter a benchmark surf kite while refining the canopy shaping, profile, attack angles, bridle configuration and construction details. The result is a more efficient and direct-feeling kite that combines excellent drift with the clear bar feedback and manoeuvrability needed for precise wave riding and strapless progression.
Its three-strut moderate-aspect platform, Ultra HT airframe, Teijin D2 Ripstop canopy and adjustable Vert-X bridle create a lightweight, stable and responsive package. The Drifter Apex is equally relevant to experienced wave riders pushing critical sections and riders entering surf kiting who want a predictable kite that remains easy to locate through the bar.

WHO IS IT FOR?
The Drifter Apex is designed for riders who prioritise wave riding, strapless freestyle and kite foiling. It is particularly well suited to riders using surfboards or directional boards who want a kite that can travel downwind without requiring constant steering input.
Newer surf riders benefit from the Drifter’s clear bar feedback, predictable manoeuvrability and ability to remain stable while attention shifts to the board and wave. More advanced riders can use the same qualities to ride more critical sections, take the kite into a broader range of conditions and progress powered strapless tricks with greater control.
It is also an excellent recreational kite-foiling option for riders who want an inflatable kite that follows naturally on downwind runs, turns quickly without excessive loop power and remains easy to locate throughout manoeuvres.

KEY TECHNOLOGY
Ultra HT Airframe – Cabrinha’s Apex airframe material provides low elongation, structural support and a responsive connection between rider input and kite movement. The supported frame helps the Drifter retain its shape through gusts, turns and changes in line tension.
Teijin D2 Ripstop Canopy – A lightweight canopy material selected for performance, bias control and durability. It works with the supported Ultra HT frame to maintain clean shaping and predictable feedback.
Slack-Line Drift – The Drifter is specifically shaped to remain stable when a rider moves towards the kite and line tension reduces. This allows more natural surfing because the kite can be parked rather than constantly flown through the window.
Pure Form Panels – High-accuracy canopy panels create a cleaner profile entry and more controlled aerofoil shape, supporting efficiency, smooth power and predictable steering.
Vert-X Adjustable Bridle – Allows use with Cabrinha’s Unify High-Y or Low-V configurations. The system provides additional choice over steering response, turning radius, feedback and general ride character.
Apex Bridle Material – Thin, low-elongation bridle lines reduce unnecessary drag and improve the immediacy of steering input.
Trailing-Edge Support – EVA rigidity battens support the canopy through turning and help keep the trailing edge quiet and controlled.
Airframe Inflation System – Cabrinha’s updated inflation platform is designed around simple operation, dependable sealing and straightforward compatibility with modern pump fittings.
DESIGNER NOTES
Cabrinha designer Pat Goodman explains that the Drifter has always been developed around one central objective: allowing riders to focus fully on the wave. For 2027, the aim was not to change its established character but to refine the qualities that have made it a benchmark surf kite.
The compact, moderate-to-low-aspect platform creates a relatively small footprint in the sky, helping the kite react quickly and predictably while maintaining stability. Combined with the Ultra HT airframe, this produces a direct, responsive and playful feel through the bar.
Particular attention was given to the way the kite drifts and follows a rider down the line. Refinements to the profile shaping and attack angles across the canopy improve the balance between steering response and slack-line drift, helping the kite remain where it has been positioned while the rider surfs through critical sections.
Updates to the canopy shaping, bridle configuration and construction details further improve efficiency, responsiveness and handling. Many of these refinements are subtle visually, but are intended to be felt through cleaner steering, improved balance and a more connected ride.

DRIFTER APEX VS MOTO APEX
The Drifter Apex and Moto Apex are both responsive three-strut kites, but they are designed around different priorities.
- Drifter Apex – surf-specific design with superior slack-line drift, less abrupt vertical pull during strapless tricks and a kite that can be parked while the rider moves towards it
- Moto Apex – broader all-round freeride platform that sits farther forward in the window and suits riders mixing twin-tip, surfboard and foil disciplines
Choose the Drifter Apex when wave riding and drift are the priority. Choose the Moto Apex when you want a more general-purpose kite covering freeride, jumps, foiling and occasional surf use.
DRIFTER APEX VS DUOTONE NEO
Both are dedicated wave-kite concepts, but the key distinction highlighted by Cabrinha is how the kite behaves when travelling downwind on a sideshore wave. The Drifter is designed to be positioned and left relatively stable while the rider moves towards it, reducing the need to repeatedly fly the kite through the window to maintain tension. This supports a more natural, board-led surfing style.
Choose the Drifter Apex for dedicated wave riding, slack-line drift and strapless control. Choose the Moto Apex for wider all-round freeride versatility. Send us your riding style and current quiver and we’ll help you compare them.
