KEY TECHNOLOGY

Ultra HT Airframe – Cabrinha’s Apex airframe material provides low elongation, structural support and a responsive connection between rider input and kite movement. The supported frame helps the Drifter retain its shape through gusts, turns and changes in line tension.

Teijin D2 Ripstop Canopy – A lightweight canopy material selected for performance, bias control and durability. It works with the supported Ultra HT frame to maintain clean shaping and predictable feedback.

Slack-Line Drift – The Drifter is specifically shaped to remain stable when a rider moves towards the kite and line tension reduces. This allows more natural surfing because the kite can be parked rather than constantly flown through the window.

Pure Form Panels – High-accuracy canopy panels create a cleaner profile entry and more controlled aerofoil shape, supporting efficiency, smooth power and predictable steering.

DESIGNER NOTES

Cabrinha designer Pat Goodman explains that the Drifter has always been developed around one central objective: allowing riders to focus fully on the wave. For 2027, the aim was not to change its established character but to refine the qualities that have made it a benchmark surf kite.

The compact, moderate-to-low-aspect platform creates a relatively small footprint in the sky, helping the kite react quickly and predictably while maintaining stability. Combined with the Ultra HT airframe, this produces a direct, responsive and playful feel through the bar.

Particular attention was given to the way the kite drifts and follows a rider down the line. Refinements to the profile shaping and attack angles across the canopy improve the balance between steering response and slack-line drift, helping the kite remain where it has been positioned while the rider surfs through critical sections.

Updates to the canopy shaping, bridle configuration and construction details further improve efficiency, responsiveness and handling. Many of these refinements are subtle visually, but are intended to be felt through cleaner steering, improved balance and a more connected ride.
